reMYnd โ€” Month 1: Meaning & Purpose
Pillar 8 โ€” Meaning & Purpose

Month 1 โ€” Foundations

Orientation โ€” Why Does This Matter to Me?

How This Pillar Works

๐Ÿ“Œ About this pillar

Meaning & Purpose runs as a monthly touchpoint across all 12 months โ€” not a standalone module. Each month connects the program theme to a deeper question about what you're building your health for.

There are two streams. Stream A is evidence-based and available to everyone. Stream B is Naomi's personal Christian perspective โ€” clearly labelled and completely optional. Both streams address the same monthly question through different lenses.

This Month's Focus

๐ŸŽฏ What to do this month

Work through the three practices below across the month โ€” one per week, with the fourth week for reflection and sharing. Each practice builds on the last. They take 15โ€“20 minutes each and are designed to be returned to throughout the year.

Forum prompt this month: "In one sentence โ€” what are you protecting by being here?" Post your answer in the community forum. Reading what others wrote is itself a meaningful practice.

Why purpose predicts brain health

Sense of purpose independently predicts lower dementia risk, longer lifespan, and better recovery from illness โ€” even after controlling for every other lifestyle factor. This isn't soft content. It's one of the strongest findings in the longevity literature (Boyle et al., 2010, 2012).

Your Three Practices

1 โ€” Values Clarification
Identifying what you actually value โ€” versus what you think you should value. Research on behaviour change consistently shows that values-aligned goals sustain motivation through difficulty far better than externally imposed ones. Most people have never sat down and named their values clearly.
โœฆ
Practice: Write three values that, if you were genuinely living them, would make the next 20 years feel worthwhile. Not aspirational values โ€” actual ones. What do you consistently act on, even when it costs you something?
2 โ€” The Evidence on Purpose and Health
Purpose is not a soft concept. A sense of purpose independently predicts reduced dementia risk, lower all-cause mortality, better cardiovascular health, and faster recovery from illness. The mechanism involves reduced chronic stress activation, better sleep architecture, and stronger health behaviours โ€” all because the brain is oriented toward something meaningful rather than just reacting to the immediate.
โœฆ
Practice: Reflect honestly: does your daily life currently reflect the values you named in Practice 1? Where is the gap largest? This is not a judgment โ€” it's information. The gap is where this program lives.
3 โ€” Your Personal "Why" Statement
Not a mission statement. Not an aspiration. A simple, honest sentence about what you are protecting and who you are doing this for. This statement will anchor every hard month in the program. The research on implementation intentions shows that having a clear "why" dramatically improves follow-through when motivation drops โ€” and it will drop.
โœฆ
Practice: Draft a single sentence beginning with: "I am doing this because..." Keep it honest. Keep it personal. It doesn't need to be inspiring โ€” it needs to be true.

Stream A โ€” This Month's Reflection

๐Ÿ™
A note from Naomi This stream reflects my personal Christian faith โ€” it's not the scientific framework of the program, and it's not for everyone. I offer it because my faith is inseparable from why I built reMYnd, and because some of you will find this lens valuable. If it's not your lens, Stream A has everything you need. If it is โ€” welcome to the deeper conversation.

This Month's Focus

๐ŸŽฏ What to do this month

Work through the three faith-based practices below. They are designed to sit alongside Stream A, not replace it. The monthly question is the same โ€” "Why does this matter to me?" โ€” but explored through the lens of scripture, stewardship, and calling.

Purpose as calling, not just self-actualisation

The secular science frames purpose as something you discover in yourself. The Christian tradition frames it as something you are called into โ€” which is both more demanding and, for many people, more sustaining. Both are real. This stream explores what it means to act from calling rather than from self-improvement alone.

Your Three Practices

1 โ€” Your Testimony as Foundation
Naomi's personal story โ€” how a family experience of dementia and a deep faith became the origin of this program. Shared in Month 1 as an act of transparency: you deserve to know who built what you're inside, and why. This is also an invitation to reflect on your own story โ€” what brought you here, and what you believe about why it matters.
โœฆ
Practice: Watch Naomi's Month 1 personal testimony video. Then journal in response to this question: what is your own origin story for being here? What have you seen, experienced, or been afraid of that made this feel important?
2 โ€” Stewardship of the Body
The theological framework of caring for your body as an act of faithfulness โ€” not vanity, not performance, not fear. 1 Corinthians 6:19โ€“20 frames the body as a temple โ€” something to be honoured and cared for, not because it belongs to you, but precisely because it doesn't. This reframes the entire health behaviour question: not "what do I want?" but "what have I been entrusted with?"
โœฆ
Practice: Sit with this question: how does viewing your body as something to steward โ€” rather than own โ€” change how you approach this program? Write one honest paragraph. There's no right answer.
3 โ€” Meaning Rooted in Calling
The secular research shows that having a sense of purpose is protective. The Christian tradition goes further: purpose is not something you construct, it's something you discern. Calling involves gifts, community, need, and time โ€” and it shifts across seasons of life. Midlife is one of the most significant seasons for this discernment, as many of the roles that once defined us (career, parenting, achievement) begin to change.
โœฆ
Practice: Write one sentence about what you believe you are called to be or do in this season of your life. Not what you used to be called to. Not what others expect. What feels like yours, right now?

Stream B โ€” This Month's Reflection

Looking Ahead

Each month, Meaning & Purpose connects the program theme to a new question โ€” building a 12-month arc from orientation (Month 1) through to integration (Month 12). The practices deepen as you accumulate self-knowledge across the year.

Next month (Month 2 โ€” Cardiorespiratory Fitness): "What am I getting fit for โ€” and what does a healthy future actually look like for me?"
